P.S. ARTS’ Program Director, Tiffany Owens, recently lead two sessions at the Arts Matter Symposium organized by LA Promise. Read more about the event below.
P.S. ARTS supported the ArtsMatter Symposium again in this, the event’s second year, on August 5-6, 2024. LA Promise, who organizes the symposium, created an event that nearly doubled in attendance over its inaugural year last year and took place at the CA Science Center. I presented sessions that centered “Curiosity, Opportunity, and Collaboration in Arts Learning Spaces” which happened to also be my session title. I was thrilled to have both sessions full, with standing room only at the second session!
Beginning with the question, “What do students need to be able to drop into creative flow?” I took attendees through a series of quick performing arts-based activities to experience exactly that firsthand. Next, we identified and unpacked the underlying aspects of those activities so that teachers in the session could take those ideas back with them to implement immediately in the classroom as the school year started. And what are some of those ingredients that enhance learner engagement? Well, the session title was about curiosity, opportunity and collaboration. Making space for a sense of student agency, combined with de-centering the pervasive sense of urgency that lives in many educational spaces also helps a lot. Stay tuned for more from my recipes for learner engagement…
Thank you, Tiffany! We look forward to hearing more about learner engagemenet and updates from the P.S. ARTS Program Team.
