John Lawler, P.S. ARTS CEO, and KT Leuterio, the Associate Director of Classroom Studio, attended the CA Arts & Culture Summit in Sacramento in April. The Summit was part of CA for the Arts’ 6th Annual Arts, Culture & Creativity Month, with the theme “Art Work is Real Work”.

The first day of the Summit featured presentations about the importance of arts and culture and how they connect with advocacy. On the second day, smaller groups went to talk to lawmakers about arts education. They discussed Prop 28, and emphasized auditing and implementation methods to improve the rollout of the proposition.

Participants met with policymakers like Senator Mark Bradford and Senator Ben Allen to advocate for change. P.S. ARTS CEO John Lawler, offered perspectives on the challenges faced within the education system as a previous principal, highlighting the importance of bridging the gap between policy and practice. Participants emphasized the importance of sharing success stories, addressing the need for hiring more qualified teachers and getting more students access to the arts.

Overall, the Summit was a chance to advocate for arts education and connect with others who share the same goal. They left feeling inspired and ready to keep pushing for change, to address the needs surrounding the implementation of Prop 28, and to bring more arts education to more schools and communities throughout California
