P.S. ARTS’ Deputy Director Elda recently had the opportunity to attend a Senior Art Show from one of our community partners, engAGE. Read her blog post write up to learn more about how the event went and see photos from the art show!
Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a Senior Art Show at the Piedmont Senior Apartments, at the invitation of Arnold Schmidt, Program Director for engAGE. The exhibit featured a beautiful range of artwork created by senior residents, including hand-stitched kantha quilts, hyper-realistic black-and-white portraits of Old Hollywood icons, colorful landscapes, and beautifully crafted jewelry. One of the community’s most prolific artists, Brindell, had a table overflowing with paintings in every style and subject matter imaginable. I was drawn to a serene painting of two cranes, which Brindell shared are symbols of good luck. The experience was deeply moving and it was impossible not to feel the pride, passion, and purpose radiating from each artist and their work.

At P.S. ARTS, we’ve long believed in the power of creative expression to enrich lives, and we’ve seen firsthand how art supports human development, emotional well-being, and happiness from early childhood through older adulthood. We’ve partnered with engAGE in the past, including hosting an Art Night focused on embroidery for seniors living in LA’s Chinatown, and we are excited to build on that relationship with future intergenerational programming. Events like the Senior Art Show, and the crane painting that now sits on my shelf, are powerful reminders that art connects us across ages and experiences, offering not only a means of self-expression but also a shared language of beauty and joy.
